Smith, B.F.A., M.A., M.F.A, Studio Art "Art enlivens the spirit of the community. The purpose of Studio 598 is to meet the needs of those who want to discover or expand their interest and skill in the visual arts. As both an art instructor and a practicing artist, I am interested in helping individuals and groups develop their artistic talents and offer a space that can serve as a hub for all who want to advance their knowledge and experience in the visual arts." Norma Smith has been teaching Studio Courses and Art History at Western Carolina University since 2001. She is a serious artist who works in painting, drawing and mixed media, exhibiting regularly. Her experience in coordinating art programs began in 1979 when she launched the first art program for Highlands School. Since that time she has been involved in numerous community art programs in Macon and Jackson County. The opening of Studio 598 is a continuation of her desire provide quality art instruction and events to enhance community life. The staff at Studio 598 varies over the course of the year but are always dedicated students, graduate students and alumni from WCU all of whom are selected for their exceptional creativity, teaching skills and leadership qualities.
